14.11.2023 : Udipi

 14.11.23 : Udipi

We go up early and had a cup of hot coffee and got ready to set off to St. Mary's Island.  We all got ready to have breakfast at Udupi Restaurant where we had our fill of typical Mangalore breakfast of Golli baje, Sajege Bajel, neer dosa, Utappa and ended up with hot coffee.

After lovely breakfast, we moved to Malpe beach to catch cataraman to St. Mary's Island which was 30mins drive by boat. We were all made to wear heavy bulky vests. The ferry ride will cost  approximately Rs. 300 per person and the ride generally starts only after the ferry is completely full.

St. Mary's Islands, also known as Coconut Island and Thonsepar, are a set of four small islands in the Arabian Sea off the coast of Malpe in Udipi, Karnataka, India. They are known for their distinctive geological formation of columnar rhyolitic lava. This island is special because it has these unique hexagonal, basalt rocks that were formed million of years ago when Madagascar Island got separated from India. Vasco da Gama is understood to have touched the island in 1498 before he reached Calicut. Its a no mans island and its only for tourist.

It is beautiful island with eco instructions not to litter and not to bring any food but you found waste plastic bottles and plastics food packets strewn around. This place has no water fountain or taps or even toilets and hence people dont follow hygiene. There is no efforts to clean up the place.   The beaches around supposed to be very clean but instruction not to swim. It is idyllic, with swaying palms, fine white sand.  We walked around and returned back to base and returned back to beach by the ferry boat.  We went and had lunch and returned back to our villa.  Evening we went for our goli baje and Sajege Bajel.  Evening we went to Kodi Bengre Delta Beach.

Surrounded by water on three sides, Kodi Bengre Beach is a perfect attraction for beach lovers. With the Suvarna River draining into the Arabian Sea,  it forms a delta and hence it gets its name as Delta Beach and is also known as a 'sangama' point. It has a small port for fisheries and is famous for toddy and freshly prepared seafood.

We returned back to our Villa to pack and get ready to returned next day to catch our train back to Mumbai while our two cousins Jayamani and Puspha returned by bus next morning.
